Types of Probation Supervision

Being on probation may offer an individual convicted of a crime the opportunity to avoid spending time in prison. Though it can seem an attractive alternative to imprisonment, being placed on probation is far from easy. It can make everyday life feel like the imprisonment it is designed to replace. The different types of probation supervision play a large role in how oppressive a sentence will be.

If you have been placed on probation or believe you may be on probation soon, an experienced defense attorney can help you negotiate the terms of your sentence. To discuss your case, contact the Appleton criminal defense lawyers of Kohler, Hart & Priebe by calling 414-271-9595 today.

What are the Options?

There are four primary types of probation supervision. From most intrusive to least intrusive, they are:

  • Intensive probation – probation sentences involving home detention, GPS monitoring, or other highly intrusive tactics. This is common for those convicted of violent crimes or repeat offenders.
  • Standard supervision – offenders are required to regularly check in with their probation officers.
  • Unsupervised probation – no probation officer is assigned. The offender must complete the guidelines of his or her probation agreement without the supervision of an officer.
  • Informal supervision – probation without being found guilty for a crime. After the specified period has expired, the case is dismissed.
