New shelter for domestic abuse victims opens

by Administrator 29. December 2011 05:14

Susan Bird-Winbun of Reedsburg is in the process of creating a domestic violence shelter and healing/rehabilitation program for abuse victims.  Bird-Winbun lost both of her children when her former boyfriend, David Yates, was convicted of killing her infant twins, Tyler and Susannah.

The name of the new organization is called the Fairy House Foundation.  According to Bird-Winbun, "We want to be more personalized and offer one-on-one services from beginning to end for our victims."  Teenage girls and woman make up the majority of her 25 clients.  They are still looking for a location in the Reedsburg, Baraboo, and Wisconsin Dells area to build a shelter for abuse victims.

There is another organization similar to Fairy House Foundation for victims of domestic violence in the south central Wisconsin area called Hope House.  What's most important, according to Ellen Allen of Hope House, is "...to be very cautious about duplicating any services we offer in our small communities, because the funding is already stretched so much."

Appleton Man Arrested for '03 Sexual Assault

by Administrator 1. October 2010 05:02

According to court documents, 31 year-old Donnell Thomas Bellamy pleaded guilty before County Circuit Court Judge Paul A. Hackner. Bellamy attacked a 13 year-old girl on July 2, 2003. Police say the victim was walking to a friends house around 12:30 a.m. when she was stopped "two minutes" from her fathers house by a man in a dark car. The man said if she didn't get in, he would kill her, Assistant State Attorney Kathleen Rogers said.

Bellamy was charged after DNA samples were matched to genetic material recovered from cold cases in state and federal databases. Authorities got a hit earlier this year and detectives arrested Bellamy at his home in Appleton.

College students offer BAC test to prevent drunken driving

by Administrator 23. September 2010 09:12

Students at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse have purchased a $55 breathalyzer in order to allow fellow students to use it before getting into a vehicle to drive home.

Students have made posters and carried them around downtown in order to promote the free BAC tests that they offer. If people ignore the sign, the two students have asked people who are about to get behind the wheel of a car to use it.

These students are trying their hardest to save their fellow students from a DUI citation and keep them and others on the road safe. The two students that have started the efforts both lost friends to drinking and driving and do not want anyone else to have to go through that.

If you or a loved one has been charged with a DUI, contact the Appleton criminal lawyers of Kohler, Hart & Priebe, LLP by calling 414-271-9595 today.
