Super Bowl Sunday this weekend

by Administrator 31. January 2012 15:18

Appleton criminal defense attorneys of Kohler, Hart, and Priebe are happy to announce the 46th Super Bowl held this Sunday.

Just four years after they played one another in the 2008 Super Bowl, the New York Giants and New England Patriots are back to play head-to-head.  The Patriots are hoping to defeat the Giants after losing in the 2008 game.  Their record for this season is 15-3, and the Giants enter the game with a 12-7 record.

This will be the fifth time Patriots' head coach Bill Belichick along with his quarterback Tom Brady have been to the Super Bowl with the New England Patriots in the last 11 seasons.

The game kicks off Sunday at 6:30pm EST in Indianapolis at Lucas Oil Stadium.  Madonna will perform at the Half Time Show, and Kelly Clarkson will sing the National Anthem.  For more details, visit the Super Bowl website

New shelter for domestic abuse victims opens

by Administrator 29. December 2011 05:14

Susan Bird-Winbun of Reedsburg is in the process of creating a domestic violence shelter and healing/rehabilitation program for abuse victims.  Bird-Winbun lost both of her children when her former boyfriend, David Yates, was convicted of killing her infant twins, Tyler and Susannah.

The name of the new organization is called the Fairy House Foundation.  According to Bird-Winbun, "We want to be more personalized and offer one-on-one services from beginning to end for our victims."  Teenage girls and woman make up the majority of her 25 clients.  They are still looking for a location in the Reedsburg, Baraboo, and Wisconsin Dells area to build a shelter for abuse victims.

There is another organization similar to Fairy House Foundation for victims of domestic violence in the south central Wisconsin area called Hope House.  What's most important, according to Ellen Allen of Hope House, is "...to be very cautious about duplicating any services we offer in our small communities, because the funding is already stretched so much."

Lower domestic violence deaths in Wisconsin

by Administrator 28. September 2011 07:06

A new report from the Wisconsin Coalition Against Domestic Violence shows that domestic violence deaths in the state have decreased from 2009. In 2010, there were 58 fatalities compared to 67 in 2009. 2009 marked a ten-year high in domestic violence deaths.

However, the coalition warns that ending domestic violence is far from over. Nearly 29% of all homicides in Wisconsin last year were as a result of domestic violence. In 2010, twelve children were orphaned or left without a mother. On average, 57% of the victims were woman. Half of all the domestic violence homicides involved victims who had left a relationship or were trying to end one. Domestic violence is not limited to spouses and couples- victims ranged in age from less than a year-old to 87 years-old.

If you or someone you love has been accused of domestic violence, contact the Appleton domestic violence defense lawyers of Kohler & Hart at 414-271-9595.
