A man in Milwaukee was recently formally charged with causing a fire that burned down several restaurants, including his own, and apartments on Milwaukee's east side. The man has also been charged with arson to commit mail fraud, as officers discovered that the man was attempting to receive money from an insurance policy on his restaurant.
The fire occurred in January and caused over $3 million in damage. Officers investigating the fire suspected arson from the start, and eventually discovered that the man, and owner of the Black and White Cafe, was the person who had started the fire. Upon further investigation, it was found that the man had started the fire in an attempt to cash in on a $135,000 insurance policy.
The man is facing a mandatory sentencing of 10 years in prison for mail fraud and 7-10 years in prison for arson.
