Milwaukee County Sheriff's Dept. Charged With Fixing DNA Problems

by Administrator 30. December 2009 09:26

Because of recent problems with the storage and collection of DNA samples, the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department has been forced to assess the staffing and procedures used in it's crime labs. Following reports of the state's failure to collect DNA samples of thousands of felons for the state data base, a committee of officials from the Department of Justice and the Department of Corrections were tasked with recovering the samples.

County sheriffs have been collecting samples from individuals and have stated that they are still looking for about 500 individuals who failed to submit samples after their convictions.

Wisconsin strengthens drunk driving laws

by Administrator 31. August 2009 04:20

Across the nation many states are adopting stricter drunken driving laws. However, in Wisconsin, many lawmakers believe that Wisconsin drunken driving standars will  stay lower than most other states.

Currently in the Wisconsin legislature, congressmen are likely to adopt laws that would require first-time offenders to use interlock devices and make four-time drunken offenses a felony. These laws would beef up drunken driving laws but will still keep them below national averages.

In most other states, interlock devices are used for anyone caught driving with a BAC above 8.0 percent. Also, most other states consider a third drunken driving offense a felony.

Five Arrested in Fight

by Administrator 1. July 2009 02:22

Five individuals have been arrested in Manitowoc following a fight that involved nearly 20 people outside a bar.

The fight involved a large crowd and was broken up with several police officers made it to the location of the fight.  The people involved in the fight were arrested after authorities found them in an apartment above the bar.

Almost all the individuals arrested had been drinking at the bar and were given tests to determine their blood alcohol level.  Most tests show the individuals had several drinks in their body, and were above the level for legal intoxication.

Murders in Wisconsin Down for the Year

by Administrator 26. June 2009 04:48

The number of murders that took place in Wisconsin are fewer than the year before.  This is good news for the state, as it shows a slight improvement in the reduction of crime.

The drop in homicides for 2008 was 20% less than the previous year. This means that a drop in 18 homicides took place for the year.  Research will look into what caused this drop in homicides.  Some officials believe that it was increased law enforcement efforts.

Woman Sentenced 5 Years for Fraud

by Administrator 10. June 2009 07:16

A Milwaukee woman was recently sentenced to five years in prison, and with up to 12 years of supervision and restitution.

The woman was accused of defrauding the state from a healthcare scam.  The woman was estimated to have received over $369,000 in taxpayer funded money.

The defense claimed that one of the main reasons the woman did the fraud was to help pay for her cancer treatment.

This case has served as an example of why serious reforms need to occur in the system.

by Administrator 5. June 2009 05:21

A cocaine trafficker in Milwaukee has been sentenced to more than 30 years in prison.  The man was considered very large scale, and made purchases of items such as a $100,000 watch.  The man was also known to purchase expensive jewelry and fancy cars regularly.

The man operated his drug business utilizing a barber shop and his wife's day care.  When the man was arrested at his home, agents found over $200,000 in cash, drugs, and guns.

The man would have had a lighter sentence, but his past criminal record brought more stringent charges.

Police are expected to file charges against a man that was involved in a police chase.  The chase resulted in an innocent bystander who was driving on the same road to be killed by the man fleeing authorities.

According to reports,  a police officer attempted to pull the man over for speeding.  The man then sped up and attempted to flee police.   While fleeing, the man crashed into another vehicle, killing the driver.  The man then fled to his girl-friend's house, where he was later arrested by police.
