A Madison, Wisconsin doctor has settled a Medicare fraud case. The hospital that the doctor worked for allegedly provided false claims to Medicare--claims made for patients who never visited the hospital and claims made for services not needed or performed or more expensive than actually performed. The claims were made on the behalf of the doctor from September 2002 to May 2004. Later in 2004, the hospital informed Medicare that it may have accidentally sent it false claim.
Eventually the hospital settled the claim for $165,000 in 2006. The doctor also more recently agreed to pay $30,000 to settle the suit. He also agreed to voluntary be excluded from all federal health care programs. In return, he signed a statement stating that he was not at fault but neither was the U.S. government wrong in its concern.
